Got back to Hong Kong yesterday evening. Greenie has just left for Singapore though, so we won't have each other's support for PCP for the next week. She has a lot of travel this month, being away for most of the month, but we've been doing our exercises seperately since I went to Grandma's funeral anyway, and it seems to have made us both stronger and less dependent on each other, which I'm really proud of.
I made some wholemeal potato and rosemary loaf before going to Penang for the funeral, and took it with me, since Greenie didn't really like it. My family happened to get a slice of the bread, and tried it. None of them liked it either... -.- I had followed the recipe to a T, except whenever I saw the words oil sugar or salt, had left them out. Plus it was perhaps for white flour instead of wholemeal. Oh well, back to the drawing board. I've tried to make bread a few times in my life, but never seem to be able to get it to rise properly.
I tried making more bread this evening, since I've got all this flour from my previous attempt (plus I want to work out the secret of getting the bread to rise properly and be fluffy!!!)
Followed the recipe for wholemeal bread rolls on the side of the packet this time. By default no oil and no sugar, so a good start, but there was salt in the recipe which I have foregone. See how they turn out later tonight.
;)
Also just posted up my day 18 pictures. Haven't had a chance to take for Greenie yet, so hers may have to wait till she comes back from Singapore at the end of this week.
Edit: and here are the finished bread rolls! mm... I hope they taste as good as they look and smell! Guess I'll find out tomorrow.
Wow Wei --- you'll look great on day 90 as you don't have a lot of fat to begin with! Will be fun to watch your transformation.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I forgot to add salt to my bread one time (I make it weekly) and it had no "bread" smell without the salt plus it was horrible. I let my bread rise in the oven (off) with the light on. It warms it up a little in there. Since your bread isn't rising I wonder how hot the water is that you are using? It might be too hot and therefore "kills" the yeast. I heat my water to about 110* F --- seems like the perfect temperature. You also have to have some sort of sweetener for the yeast to feed on to "grow". I use honey in my recipe.
Let me know how the bread tastes without any salt.
This is when I WISH I had an oven in my apartment. Bread making must be such a lovely thing to do.
ReplyDeleteGreenie and Wei great job on finding your way through this and doing PCP. It will help you be strong later. And agreed on Molly's comments about you both being very light to begin with. Muscles will surely look dramatic later.
Take care guys!
Hi Molly, bread tasted OK. They rose ok, but still a bit dense compared to what you buy out in the shops. I like the idea of letting the bread rise in the oven - I'll try that with the next batch; & perhaps try adding a pinch of salt even though its suppsoed to be against our used ingredients, see how it affects the taste. The bread did taste a bit doughy, but I didn't mind that. I usually heat my water pretty warm since I'm worried about the doigh not being warm enough, so perhaps I am killing the yeast. I'll try with cooler water next time.
ReplyDeleteThanks to Helen on your comments too! I hope I'm able to build some muscle in the next few months. I'm sick of everyone telling me I'm too skinny. My parents think pcp isn't feeding me enough. I hope I can prove them wrong!
